IV Sedation
Feel MOre Comfortable and Relaxed Dental Treatment
For some people, visiting the dentist can feel overwhelming. Whether you experience dental anxiety, have had a difficult dental experience in the past or require a more involved procedure, feeling comfortable and supported throughout your appointment is important.
At Albany Creek Dental, we understand that every patient has different needs and concerns when it comes to dental treatment. That’s why we offer access to IV sedation, also known as twilight sedation, to help suitable patients feel more relaxed while receiving the dental care they need.
Working with Queensland Dental Sedations, our practice can provide access to professionally administered and closely monitored IV sedation, allowing eligible patients to undergo dental treatment in the familiar surroundings of Albany Creek Dental.
Our goal is to make dental care more accessible for patients who may otherwise feel hesitant about attending appointments, while maintaining our commitment to personalised treatment and long-term oral health.
What Is Sedation?
Intravenous (IV) sedation is a form of conscious sedation used to help patients feel deeply relaxed during dental procedures.
The sedation medication is administered through a small cannula, usually placed in a vein in the arm or hand. This allows the sedation clinician to carefully adjust the medication throughout the appointment according to the patient’s individual needs and response.
IV sedation is commonly referred to as twilight sedation because patients enter a relaxed, drowsy state while generally remaining able to breathe independently and respond to verbal instructions. Unlike general anaesthesia, IV sedation does not ordinarily involve making the patient completely unconscious.
Many patients experience reduced awareness of the procedure and have limited recollection of their treatment afterwards. However, individual experiences vary, and some patients may remember parts of their appointment.
Local anaesthetic is generally still used to manage pain during dental treatment, as IV sedation primarily helps with relaxation and anxiety rather than providing complete pain relief on its own.
Who May Benefit from IV Sedation?
IV sedation may be suitable for patients who find dental appointments particularly challenging or who require procedures that may be difficult to tolerate while fully alert. It may be considered for patients experiencing:
Dental Anxiety or Fear
Dental anxiety can range from mild nervousness to significant fear that makes attending appointments difficult. IV sedation may help patients feel calmer and more comfortable while undergoing necessary treatment.
Previous Negative Dental Experiences
Patients who have experienced uncomfortable or distressing dental procedures in the past may find it difficult to return for further treatment. Sedation can provide an additional option for managing anxiety associated with future appointments.
A Strong Gag Reflex
An overactive gag reflex can make certain dental procedures uncomfortable or difficult to complete. IV sedation may help reduce the sensitivity and anxiety associated with treatment.
Complex or Lengthy Dental Procedures
Some treatments require patients to remain in the dental chair for an extended period. IV sedation may help make longer appointments more manageable.
Difficulty Tolerating Dental Treatment
Patients who struggle to remain comfortable or relaxed during dental procedures may benefit from discussing sedation as part of their treatment plan.
IV sedation is not appropriate for everyone. A thorough assessment of your medical history, medications, general health and planned dental treatment is required before determining whether sedation is suitable.
Dental Treatments That May Be Performed Under IV Sedation
IV sedation can be considered for a range of dental procedures, depending on the patient’s individual circumstances and the clinical requirements of the treatment. At Albany Creek Dental, sedation may be considered for suitable patients undergoing:
- Wisdom tooth removal
- Dental extractions
- Selected oral surgery procedures
- Root canal treatment
- Restorative dental procedures
- Multiple dental treatments requiring longer appointments
Sedation suitability is assessed individually, and not every procedure or patient will be appropriate for IV sedation. Our dental team will explain the available options and discuss whether sedation may be beneficial for your proposed treatment.
IV Sedation at Albany Creek Dental – Working with Queensland Dental Sedations
At Albany Creek Dental, we recognise that patients often feel more comfortable receiving treatment from a dental team they already know and trust.
Through our collaboration with Queensland Dental Sedations, eligible patients can access IV sedation within our dental practice rather than automatically needing to attend a separate hospital or day surgery facility.
Queensland Dental Sedations provides a mobile dental sedation service across South-East Queensland, with sedation administered by appropriately qualified clinicians using dedicated monitoring equipment.
The service is led by Dr Ryan Liang, who holds a Graduate Diploma in Conscious Sedation and Pain Control from the University of Sydney and is endorsed by the Dental Board of Australia in conscious sedation.
During an IV sedation appointment, the sedation clinician is responsible for administering and monitoring the sedation, while your treating dentist focuses on completing the planned dental procedure.
This coordinated approach allows the dental and sedation teams to work together, with patient wellbeing and clinical safety remaining central throughout the appointment.
What to Expect During Your IV Sedation Appointment
Understanding the sedation process can help you feel more prepared and confident about your dental treatment.
1. Initial Consultation and Assessment
Your journey begins with a consultation at Albany Creek Dental. Our dentist will assess your oral health, discuss the treatment required and consider whether IV sedation may be an appropriate option. If sedation is being considered, your relevant medical history and treatment details will be reviewed by the sedation provider. Additional information or medical clearance may be required depending on your health circumstances.
2. Preparing for Your Appointment
Before your procedure, you will receive specific instructions from the sedation team. These may include guidance about:
- When to stop eating and drinking before your appointment
- Which medications to take or avoid, as directed by your treating clinicians
- What clothing to wear
- Arranging a responsible adult to accompany you home
- Activities to avoid following sedation
It is important to follow all preparation instructions carefully. Failure to do so may mean your appointment needs to be postponed for safety reasons.
3. Administration of IV Sedation
On the day of treatment, the sedation clinician will review your preparation and undertake the necessary safety checks. A small cannula is inserted into a vein, allowing the sedation medication to be administered. As the medication takes effect, you will generally begin to feel increasingly relaxed and drowsy.
Throughout the procedure, the sedation team monitors your breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate, blood pressure and other relevant clinical observations. Your dentist then carries out the planned treatment while the sedation clinician continues to monitor and manage your sedation.
4. Recovery After Treatment
Once your dental procedure is complete, the sedation medication is stopped and you are monitored as you recover. Although you may begin feeling more alert relatively quickly, the effects of sedation can continue for several hours. You will only be discharged once the sedation clinician determines that the appropriate recovery criteria have been met.
A responsible adult must accompany you home and remain available to support you in accordance with your discharge instructions. You must not drive, operate machinery, drink alcohol or make important decisions for at least 24 hours after IV sedation, or longer if directed by your sedation clinician.
Understanding the Benefits of IV Sedation
Reduced Dental Anxiety
Sedation can help patients feel calmer and less aware of their surroundings during treatment. This may be particularly helpful for people who experience significant dental anxiety.
Greater Comfort During Longer Appointments
Remaining in the dental chair for extended periods can be challenging. IV sedation may make longer procedures easier to tolerate.
Reduced Recollection of Treatment
Some sedation medications can affect memory formation. As a result, many patients remember little of their dental procedure, although this effect varies between individuals.
Care in Familiar Surroundings
When clinically appropriate, IV sedation may allow patients to receive dental treatment at Albany Creek Dental with their usual treating dentist.
Support for Patients Who Have Delayed Dental Care
For some patients, anxiety can become a barrier to seeking necessary treatment. Discussing sedation options may help them consider returning to dental care and addressing existing oral health concerns.
IV sedation does not eliminate all discomfort or clinical risks, and outcomes differ between patients. Our team will discuss the potential benefits, limitations and alternatives before treatment.
Is IV Sedation Safe?
Patient safety is an essential consideration whenever sedation is used.
IV sedation is an established technique in dentistry, but like all medical procedures, it carries potential risks and is not suitable for every patient.
Possible complications can include nausea, excessive sedation, changes in breathing, blood pressure or heart rate, and reactions to medication. Serious complications are uncommon but can occur.
To help manage these risks, patients undergo an appropriate pre-sedation assessment, and sedation is administered by a suitably qualified clinician with appropriate equipment and monitoring.
At Albany Creek Dental, IV sedation is provided in collaboration with Queensland Dental Sedations, whose team is responsible for the sedation assessment, administration, monitoring and recovery requirements.
Your suitability will depend on factors including your medical history, current medications, underlying health conditions and the nature of your proposed dental treatment. Where IV sedation is not considered appropriate, your dentist can discuss alternative approaches or referral options.
IV Sedation vs General Anaesthesia – What’s the Difference?
Although IV sedation and general anaesthesia are sometimes discussed together, they are not the same.
| IV Sedation (Twilight Sedation) | General Anaesthesia |
| Produces a relaxed, drowsy state | Produces a controlled state of unconsciousness |
| Patients generally respond to verbal instructions | Patients are not consciously responsive |
| Patients usually breathe independently | Airway and breathing support may be required |
| Often suitable for selected dental procedures in appropriately equipped practices | Typically provided in hospitals or accredited procedural facilities |
| May result in limited memory of treatment | Patients are unconscious during the procedure |
The appropriate option depends on your individual health, treatment needs and clinical assessment.

Our approach includes taking the time to listen to your concerns, explaining your treatment options and developing a plan that considers both your immediate dental needs and your ongoing oral health.
